Tanzania Kicks Off Voting in General Election
Voters are choosing the president, members of parliament, and local councils for a five-year term. A total of 17 parties have nominated presidential candidates, while 18 are competing for parliamentary and local council seats.
Women account for 32 percent of parliamentary candidates and 10 percent of those running for councilor positions. Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan is also in the race for re-election.
The electoral commission reported Tuesday that 36.65 million voters are registered on the mainland, with an additional 996,303 in Zanzibar eligible to cast ballots nationwide.
According to the commission, polling opened at 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) local time and will close at 4 p.m.
